Lyon Shipyard Drydock Modernization 2010
The upgrade of Lyon Shipyard Drydock #1 began in early 2010. Drydock #1 was towed from her slip of over 30 years on March 8th and immediately headed to the Baltimore area to be hauled at Sparrow’s Point Shipyard for extensive modernization. Following is a list of a few of the major characteristics to be upgraded during this project as well as pictures of the progress.
- Lifting capacity increased from 3000 long tons to 5000 long tons.
- Operational upgrade from 100% manual valve and pump operation to approximately 85% remote valve and pump operation.
- Vessels the drydock can haul will increase from overall length of 326 ft to 400 ft. The blockable keel length will increase from 280 ft to 326 ft.
- The speed with which Drydock #1 ballasts down and deballasts up will be 1 foot every 90 seconds.
