About Us

Lyon Shipyard has 2 facilities located on over thirty acres of prime waterfront property on the northern and southern shores of the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River, just minutes from downtown Norfolk, Virginia.

Our management team, which consists of the President, Vice President and all department heads, meet daily to address and maintain safety in the yard, identify any production problems and set priorities for manpower, material status and facilities utilization.

As one of the leading marine contractors on the east coast, Lyon Shipyard is proud to provide our customers with high quality marine repair held to the highest standards of our quality assurance department. We at Lyon Shipyard supply our customers with services including, but not limited to, marine electronics repair, barge repair, pier side repairs as well as hauling vessels out of the water for underwater repairs to equipment such as propellers, tailshafts, rudders, keel coolers and hull plating.

Location

Our location is convenient to the Chesapeake Bay, inland waterway, Atlantic Ocean, the U.S. Naval Base in Norfolk, and the Naval Amphibious Base at Little Creek, which allows us to provide fast and efficient service to our customers.

News & Events

Drydock Upgrade -
The upgrade of Lyon Shipyard Drydock #1 began in early 2010. Drydock #1 was towed from her slip of over 30 years on March 8th and immediately headed to the Baltimore area to be hauled at Sparrow’s Point Shipyard for extensive modernization. Following is a list of a few of the major characteristics to be upgraded during this project as well as pictures of the progress.

History

Lyon Shipyard prides itself on a rich and colorful history. Established in 1928 by George C. Lyon, Sr., through the acquisition of numerous facilities and equipment, our yard has grown in the shiprepair industry for over 80 years. With roots that grow deep and strong, Lyon Shipyard has developed in its current location with the dedication and support of our loyal employees, and customers that return year after year for high quality repairs and maintenance they have come to expect from Lyon.

Our Employees

Lyon Shipyard, Inc. employs a relatively stable year-round work force of between 185 and 210 employees. Our ability to accomplish a good mix of government and commercial work, has allowed us to maintain a very stable work force in the past. Additional temporary trades people are hired on an as needed basis to accommodate greater work demands by our customers.
